Evan's birthday comes in a really busy month for everyone, but he doesn't seem to mind. At the very last minute we had a little neighborhood friends get together with ice cream cake. Combine that with the beginning of summer vacation, and he was happy.
Taken the morning of his birthday. Who IS this almost teenager with the brooding look?

I can occasionally still coax a smile.

Especially when I take him to his favorite place in the world for lunch.

Evan has been asking for a video game system for as long as I can remember. I finally relented and he was completely surprised.

This look on his face makes it worthwhile.

Grandma and Grandpa came through with his other request....a new alarm clock.

He got plenty of gift cards from family and friends to splurge on games and such too.

Combining two favorites...ice cream and cake.

And of course, friends make it all worthwhile.

I can already see the teenager in him starting to emerge as his voice gets deeper and he grows taller (now the top of his head reaches my chin). I remember a post on maybe his 7th birthday about trying to just enjoy all the moments I can because he soon would be growing up and away from us. He is doing that of course and while it has been gradual, it's still difficult some days when he'd rather be with friends than hang out with us. He's doing so well though - loving school and getting straight As in honors courses, and picking up extra chores so he can save money (not that he doesn't still use some of his earnings on candy!). I love who he is, and who he is becoming, even as I miss the little boy he was. Happy Birthday, Evan.
