Happy 4th Birthday, Evan

Last year I wrote Evan an e-letter for his birthday. I've been trying to figure out if I should do the same this year, and mentally making notes on what to write (then promptly forgetting - there IS something to be said for pen and paper). Unfortunately I am not as ahead of the game as I was last year, but he only has one birthday a year, so in honor of that day, a brief summary of a year with a 3 year old...

If I ask you your favorite song, or even if I don't ask, you will request again, and again, and again, simply "Gravity." For those who haven't been initiated into the Elphaba fan club, that's short for "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. We popped the soundtrack in the car one day last spring and it's barely left the car since. Your favorite when you turned three was "One Short Day" so you are a very consistent kid. If I could only get you singing either song on video, as only a three year old can dramatize.

I refer to you as my little lovebug, and for good reason. If I ask you who you're going to marry, the answer is "Sofia, Josie, and Teddy." The order sometimes changes, but always those three. They are three little classmates from preschool that you absolutely adore. Sofia and Teddy have been with you since you all were just a few weeks old. I said it last year and I'll say it again. You love so easily. It both makes my heart swell and scares me to pieces.

You can pretend like it's nobody's business. And that's your only job. Though if you had your way, you would indeed grow up to be Batman.

This year I enrolled you in gymnastics. There are good and bad days. When you love it, you love it. When you don't, we know it. But one thing is true, any job is made easier if you stick your tongue out during the tough parts.

I seriously don't know how it's possible, and I don't recall when it happened, but the wee tot I used to have to help do what seemed like everything, is now the master of his own domain.

But I hope you always know that a little help from daddy or a hug from mommy isn't far away.
