Grandparents' Weekend

Evan had a big weekend getting spoiled by all his doting grandparents. His Nana and Poppy even gave us a break on Sunday morning and watched Evan for a couple of hours so we could go to breakfast. We felt like we were on vacation! Evan was a little darling all weekend - he's always on his best behavior when people come to visit. So that's an open invitation for anyone that wants to come give us another break...er, I mean, see the baby!

Evan's First Bottle

Dan offered to give me a short break on Thursday night by giving Evan his first bottle. OK, technically we did a short trial run a week ago just to see if Evan would take a bottle (which he did) but this was the first "full" bottle-only feeding. It's a much longer process to get a bottle ready - transfer milk to bottle stored in fridge, put bottle in cup of hot water for several minutes and try to occupy crying baby until it's ready. I was sleeping in the other room, but I woke up to hear the chaos of trying to do this before the crying intensifies. So, yes, while it was supposed to be a break for me (it still was!!) I couldn't help but get up to take a picture of Evan's daddy giving him a bottle. He took to it like a champ - the 3 ounces the nurse recommended wasn't enough! I think Dan's ready to take over the 3 a.m. (and 5 or 6 a.m.) feedings too, don't you?

Landon Sings a Lullaby

For Father's Day we headed to my parent's for a small get together with the family. It was SO nice to get out of the house for a while! Since Evan's pediatrician told us to avoid the public until he's a little older, I'll take what I can get! Evan's grandparents certainly enjoyed seeing him again, as did his Aunt, Uncle and cousin. The video is of Landon singing "Twinkle Twinkle" to him (sorry, it's a little hard to hear above the TV in the background). He's handling the job of "big cousin" very well and is excited for him to get bigger so he can teach him all the little boy things he needs to know.

Happy Father's Day!

The Power of Pooh and the Pacifier

Everyone kept telling me how indispensable having a swing would be, but Evan wasn't crazy about it the first several times we put him in it. But after a particularly fitful night, we put him in the swing and he finally fell asleep. He's also discovered the pacifier isn't so bad either. He's picky though - sometimes it works, sometimes not a chance.

Four and a half glorious hours

On Monday, Evan's pediatrician gave us the okay to let him go up to five hours between feedings. I was elated, however, Evan didn't get the message right away. BUT, last night he slept for nearly four and a half glorious hours, which means both Mommy and Daddy got some much needed continuous sleep. He was awake for a good portion of the day yesterday, keeping his Grandma Z very busy as she was here to help give me a nap break. Maybe this kiddo won't be a night owl like his Daddy after all! I don't have any new pics to post yet but here are his hospital photos. Oh, and as of Monday he weighed 8 lbs., 5 oz.! He's growing fast! He still has plenty of leg room in his newborn outfits, but he's definitely getting taller (longer)! Hmm, basketball scholarship AND academic genius? Why not?

So where did we go?

Well, nowhere quite honestly. We barely leave the house anymore. When I say "barely," of course I mean the average of me getting to leave the house to gather supplies and nourishment and her never getting to leave the house at all.

But the more important question is: is anyone even reading this blog?

We're not bad parents, and we didn't try to take him back to the hospital and ask for a refund. We've just been a teensie-weensie bit overwhelmed by Parenthood. So while we apologize for not getting these out sooner, we're sure you understand.
So here are a couple of pictures to get your Evan Henry fix...

More soon I promise.

147 Hours and Growing

The boy has some skinny legs. I mean some SKIN-ny legs! Cause there's lots of skin there, right?

Harrumph.

Mommy loves her baby...

Am I a man of good fortune or what?

Another Day of Firsts

Yesterday was an adventurous day to be sure, but Evan did some new things he'd never done in his first 100 hours. Most importantly, and more important entertainingly, was sucking his thumb. Let me dispense with the intro and go right to the video...

So there you have it.

Real Parenting Lesson #1

Dan and I decided to give Evan his first bath tonight and we were fully prepared for there to be crying and wailing (from the baby too!), but had no idea just how comical things would get. Evan was surprisingly calm and didn't cry much at all. The nurses at the hospital that I'd watched give baths said that he would cry because he'd get cold, so I thought we had beaten the system. Everything was going great, Dan had laid him on the top net of the tub above the water line and all of a sudden the waterworks began. Straight up in the air, over the tub and onto the new carpet. We were bathing him in the bedroom since it's easier than leaning over a tub and we only were using about a cup of water in the bottom of the baby tub. Dan jumps up to look for the "pee pee tee pees" in the middle of the show, and by the time he finds them the waterworks are over. I washed his hair (he actually seemed to enjoy it) and we got him all dried off, baby lotion applied, and clean clothes on. Then, blam, barf-o-rama! Evan spits up all over himself, me, down the dresser, and onto the carpet. Real Parenting Lesson #1? Don't give the baby a bath right after feeding him. And have the pee pee tee pees ready in advance!

Evan Henry is here!

Looks like I wrote that last post a little too soon. By 12:30 a.m. the next morning I was in labor. I had no idea it would take 33 hours for Evan to arrive, but it was worth every minute. On Saturday morning, May 31, at 9:11 a.m. Evan Henry entered the world at 7 pounds, 15 ounces, 20 and a half inches long. He has a head full of his Daddy's dark hair and the most amazing little face. Dan and I are just head over heels in love with him. We're home now and adjusting to new parenthood - sleepless nights (and days), more diapers than we can count, and a baby that enthralls us.

Here are some pictures from the big day and a few since we got home.
